The forecast today was for it to be a bit rainy, so it was a surprise to get up to sunshine. We pottered around doing a few boat jobs, then mid morning decided to walk to the ice cream farm. There’s a footpath through the towpath hedge that goes along the end of the marina and onto its drive; we were glad the lady on the boat behind us mentioned yesterday that it was marked by a post in the hedge (just a post, not a signpost) because I’m not sure we’d have gone through the gap otherwise. What came as a surprise is that the ice cream farm is a fully fledged children’s play centre. At least if you just want an ice cream you don’t have to pay to go in.
We wandered back to the boat in the sunshine then shortly afterwards it began to rain. It rained for a while, and at one point came down in stair rods.
We had lunch while the rain passed and then set off at about 1. By now the weather had much improved, and a little further on Beeston Castle is dead ahead.
We went past The Shady and up Wharton’s Lock, and moored on the straight below Beeston Iron Lock. We have horses in the field next to us and trains up on the embankment, but one thing that’s already noticeable is how quiet the new Avanti trains are.
3 miles, 1 lock. (26 miles, 17 locks)
