Sheffield

A drive up to Sheffield today for a boat test. I picked up Andy the photographer at Towcester, and then most of the journey is on the M1, which has long, long stretches of 50mph where they’re putting in extra emergency pull-offs, to make the smart motorway safer.

It rained on the way up and was raining when we arrived, but soon stopped — and then the sun came out which was ideal. And I didn’t take any photos.

Train trouble

I’ve come up to the boat after an early shift, as I have a boat test tomorrow. The journey took far longer than it should, because the trains from London to Guildford where my car was parked were a nightmare. There had been trespassers on the line, so the power was off for a total of two hours. By comparison, the drive (when it eventually started) via the A3, M25, and M1 was relatively problem-free.

Shortly after I got here it started raining, and the latest clutch of marina ducklings all huddled under next door’s pontoon to avoid it!

Crick Show part 2

The September Canal Boat is out, and includes the second part of my mini-reviews of the Crick Boat Show boats.
